This time of year also reminds us of a favorite Web site we enjoy recommending to kids and grown-ups alike.  While this site,  How to Love Your Dog, is called a kid's guide to dog care, anyone can enjoy it and learn about dogs.  Check out youngster's answers to the question of the month: Why does your dog love you?

New for all our readers who love the Northern breeds including sled dogs such as the Siberian Husky is our Sled Dog Training Guide with links to many of the best resources on training and conditioning sled dogs for competion.  Also fully updated for 2005 are the WDW Guide to the Yukon Quest and the Guide to the Iditarod.   The Quest starts on February 13 and the Iditarod starts March 5.

Our TalkDogs site continues to be active -- with one person currently asking if anyone can help explain why her Golden Retriever/Labrador cross is only the size of a Border collie, while another asks where he can obtain an assistance dog.  Can any of you help?  Thanks to the generous readers who helped in the past.  Feel free to add questions.

Moe among Angels on a Leash
WESTMINSTER KC HAS ANOTHER CLAIM TO FAME

Westminster Kennel Club in New York, famous for its annual dog show,  now has another activity garnering it positive acclaim.  Its therapy dog program, called Angels on a Leash, provides well trained -- and very appealing -- dogs for visits to the Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital in New York.  Among these canines is Moe, a 7-year-old standard poodle. Her owner, Robin Arnold, says Moe just understands what the kids need.

Labrador Joins Fire-Rescue Department
SNIFFING OUT POSSIBLE ARSON

A Labrador named Orly recently joined the Norfolk [Virginia] Fire-Rescue Department as a member of the arson investigation team.  One of just four accelerant detection dogs in the state, Orly will use his nose and his AFT training to pinpoint spots where accelerant has been used to start a blaze.  This 2-year-old working dog already has 15 investigations to his credit.  Discover the life of this working dog, and don't miss the great photo!

Canine Health Tips
NEW TRICKS & ANTIOXIDANTS GOOD FOR OLD DOGS

While few people spend time teaching their old dogs new tricks,  a new study done with beagles discovered that regular physical activity, mental stimulation, and a diet rich in antioxidants appear to help keep the brains of older canines in top shape. The research, supported by the U.S. National Institute on Aging (NIA ), suggests that diet and mental exercise may work more effectively in combination than by themselves. And, the researchers say, the study may have implications for humans, too. Learn about how the study was done -- and its implications for your dog and you.

Genetic tests can play a helpful role in dogs' health.
