Canine Health Tips of the Week
NEW GUIDELINES FOR CANINE AND FELINE DIETS RELEASED
The most respected source of
science-based information in the U.S., the National Research Council, has issued a new
report this fall with updated guidelines for feeding dogs and cats. Along with the
new guidelines is an assessment that some 25 percent of all pet cats and dogs in America
are obese and need to lose weight. Just like their humans, excessively portly
pooches run the risk of diabetes, heart disease and other ailments.
The new report, replacing one done in the 1980s,
looks at nutritional needs in relation to a dog's activity level and stage in life, two
key influencing factors. A quick reference list of daily
calorie recommendations and essential vitamin and mineral requirements for dogs and cats,
as well as signs that a pet may be deficient in a certain vitamin or mineral, is provided
online at the Petdoor, along with more on keeping your pet healthy.
Your dog's nutrition is a key to his or her health, so check
this out today.

Dog from Down Under Valued World-wide
KELPIES' ABILITIES AS WORKING DOGS GIVE THEM BIG APPEAL
Kelpies aren't
just Aussie dogs anymore, limited to Down Under. This unique breed of working dog
developed in Australia for sheep and cattle herding is now found around the world in both
cold and warm climates. And they're demonstrating their value both in their work and
in the price they cost.
Some of the remarkable jobs
they do include herding llamas in North Dakota, rounding up horses in Canada, herding
reindeer in Norway and doing avalanche work in Switzerland. The key to the breed's
success is its adaptability, says John Elston, a South Australia breeder.
